As a Christian, I would never want to actually compare deer season with Christmas. I know that there is a great, incomparable difference between the two events; however with that being said, I have felt the anticipation of both seasons. The excitement that a young child experiences on the night of Christmas Eve is very similar to the thrill that a hunter gets the night before season opens.
I came across a poem that summarizes this experience quite well. Written on the Texas Hunting Forum, the Fish Charmer shared his story: 'Twas the Night Before Deer Season.
I don't want to spoil the story for those of you who are going to read it. But I can connect to a lot of the things that he talks about in his poem. The visions of Big Bucks, preparing the big camo bag, firing up the scent smokers, leaving your worries behind, the feeling of autumn, and discovering the reason a hunter lives and breathes, are some of the greatest parts of the hunting experience!
I have never hunted any living thing in my life, well outside of fishing, but I do think the ability to do so is a great survival trait to have. I love the taste of Deer meat especially the deer meat sausage, it makes for a great pot of chili and or spaghetti. My neighbor just brought cross bows etc. in preparation of deer hunting season and as he states whatever else he decides to shoot. Your'e pretty outdoorsie, are the rest of the women in your family the same?
ReplyDeleteThe majority of my family is pretty outdoorsy. The only two people in my family that don't hunt are my mother and my oldest sister. My mom still loves the outdoors. She will fish, hike, bike, or relax outdoors all day long. My oldest sister, on the other hand, may be a different story. She's probably the odd ball of the bunch, but we still love her!
ReplyDeleteI thought the poem was a very good analogy. I enjoy hearing about the work behind the opening day and the culmination of activities that bring a reward to its preparers. Excellent life lessons here. Hunting hasn't been my thing but that's mostly because I wouldn't know what to do with my bounty.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy every bit of it. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat poem!!!!
